Project Description

The 304 km Trans Sumatra Toll Road will connect Sumatra Island from Aceh to Bakauheni. Phase 1 consists of 8 sections, which are divided into four initial sections: (1) Medan – Binjai, (2) Palembang – Indralaya, (3) Pekanbaru – Dumai, (4) Bakauheni – Terbanggi Besar; and four additional sections: (5) Terbanggi Besar – Pematang Panggang, (6) Pematang Panggang – Kayu Agung, (7) Palembang – Tanjung Api-Api and (8) Kisaran – Tebing Tinggi.

Project Significance

The purpose of this project is to improve connectivity, reduce logistic costs, and stimulate industrial growth on Sumatra Island.

The Medan – Binjai section is located in the province of North Sumatera and connects the city of Medan with Binjai.

Project Significance

This section has a vital role in supporting the flow of goods and people between Medan and Binjai. This section will serve as an alternative to the currently existing road and is expected to divide the load on the existing road. Additionally, the section shall increase connectivity and ease of access. As a result, the toll road will contribute towards regional and economic development.

This section is part of the Trans Sumatera Toll Road Network that is planned to connect the northern part of Sumatera to the southern part and will link the province of Nangroe Aceh Darussalam with Lampung. The Palembang – Indralaya section is located in the province of South Sumatera and connects the city of Palembang with Indralaya and has a total length of 22 km.

Project Significance

This section is meant to anticipate the increasing traffic projection between Palembang and Indralaya (located towards the southwest of Palembang). With the existence of a toll road connecting the two cities, traffic load will be divided and congestion will decrease, supporting regional and economic development along with increased accessibility for both cities.

The Bakauheni – Terbanggi Besar section is located in the province of Lampung with a total length of 140 km.

Project Significance

This section will serve as a main access road to and from Bakauheni Port. Since Bakauheni Port is one of the major ports that connects Java and Sumatra, this section will significantly decrease travel time needed to distribute goods and people to and form Sumatra via Bakauheni Port.
